Spider Squad at The Junior British Boulder Championships 2015

Chris Butcher

Saturday of 27th June saw Bloc Climbing in Bristol hosting the British Junior Bouldering Championships and Final round of the Junior Boulder Cup. White Spider hosted a strong team of Imogen Horrocks (Girls A), Lucy Rattue (Girls B), Freddy High (Boys B), Beth Christian (Girls C) and Chris Butcher (Boys C). With the squad looking strong at previous rounds and having put in a few months of hard training the finals where going to be interesting.

Freddy High
Freddy High on a Slab Qualifer Problem

First up was the qualifiers, each category had 8 boulder problems to climb, set by Yann Genoux and Alex Fry they comprised an interesting mix of delicate slabs, technical vertical walls and powerful overhangs. In the qualifiers all of White Spider Squad put in tremendous performances, Lucy Rattue had an excellent round finishing 10th, like wise Freddy High, Beth Christian and Chris Butcher had an excellent competition finishing 13th, 15th and 11th respectively. With only a couple of minor mistakes keeping them from possibly making finals.

Beth Christian
Beth Christian on a Vertical Qualifer Problem

Imogen Horrocks had a great qualifying round finishing 5th, getting her into the finals against a strong line up of climbers including many in the British Team. The First problem was a powerful overhang starting and finishing with very dynamic moves, Imogen made short work of the first dyno getting to the Bonus hold on her first try then falling trying to set up for the last move. Putting her briefly in joint first after this problem. The next two problems saw the finalist first on an uber technical slab requiring 100% faith in very bad footholds and slippery and sloppy handholds. Imogen once again climbed amazingly, but just couldn’t control the penultimate hold enough to finish the problem. The last problem was a technical and dynamic start, finishing with a hands off move to the finishing hold which was to small to hold to match and finish. On her 2nd go Imogen made it to the final hold, but exhausted couldn’t get the match and although she came close a couple of times couldn’t quite complete the problem. This put her in 5th place after a very strong performance, it also meant she came 3rd overall in the Junior Boulder Cup, an incredible achievement.

With the squad getting better and better we are looking forward to next seasons competitions that start in September.

The proceedings two rounds saw 10 of the White Spider performance squad qualifying for the Regional final with many making podiums. The run up to the event saw squad members putting in extra hours at the wall, training hard for those podiums which would get them to Ratho.

On the day the Squad pulled out an amazing performance, the Highlight was 8 year old (Girls E) Lucy Garlick, battling it out in a Super Final on a tough 7a to take 2nd place and secure her place at Ratho.

In Boy’s A Matt Davies and Ryan Caby has the comp of their life, climbing amazingly to secure 4th and 5th place respectively against a tough field.  Likewise in Boys B Nat Hudspith and Freddy High had a great comp finishing in joint 4th and in Girls B Lucy Rattue managed a respectful 6th and Holly James 8th, and in Boy’s D Tom Kolasinksi finished 9th.

Matt Davis from Boys Category A on Route 3
With the Performance Squad competing amazingly even with a couple sick and one injured the future is looking good for next year’s competition season. The focus now shifts to GB team selection events for some of the squad and also putting their competition skills to practice on rock.

Youth Open Results

TKM_8043

On Friday 25th July White Spider Climbing hosted the BMC Lead Youth Open 2014.

There was some fantastic climbing from all categories and some inspirational climbing from the finalists!

'The lead event on Friday was held on the relatively short walls of the White Spider, meaning that the routes were short and sharp and packed a real bouldery punch. The qualifiers produced really determined efforts from those that made the finals, with everyone giving it maximum effort in the heat.' – BMC

Routes where set by Yann Genoux and Mike Langley; Challenging in different ways and served up some great variety for the climbers .. and thrilling to watch!

YCS Final 2014 by Beth

Here's a great write- up from Performace Squad member Beth, who placed 5th at this years BMC Youth Climbing Series Competition.

'The Final at Ratho by Beth

Beth - White Spider Climbing

Ratho is such an amazing climbing centre. It is huge and the walls are very high! Chris and I went to see it on the Thursday before the competition and we were able to climb the highest wall which was fun. On the Friday, we  went to Edinbrugh on the tram and even climbed up the Scott Monument…it was 287 steps!!  The hotel was great and we had fun in the swimming pool… Immy and Tom were there too J .

On the day of the competition, we got there early with Be and picked up our competition t shirts and regional hoodies with our names on. We had a look at the routes and Be, Libby and Robin talked me through them.  There was a group talk about the rules and a group warm up, then the 33 competitors in each group were split into two groups, X and Y. I had the first three boulder routes and the first two top rope routes  first and flashed them all so I was in a good position. We had to do the third top rope route next and it looked quite tricky with lots of small crimpy holds. I was up second but I didn’t mind because I  just wanted to get on with it, as we had been waiting around a lot by then. I took a deep breath and took it slowly and steadily and remembered to breathe like Andre told me to. I had a really good climb and only came off really close to the top so I got a really good score of 97 which I was happy with for the hardest route.

Then there was another couple of hours before I got to climb the second route…no one at all had managed to complete it and I was worried because there were four nasty slopers  in a row. I took it slowly and again I did really well to get to near the top and my foot  just slipped off  missing out on the last hold where but I  got a great score of 97  so I was happy with that. Overall I got 474 points out of a maximum of 480 and came 5th place…I was only 4 points off the winning score so it was all so close at the top of my girls group D.  Matilda won, which I was really happy about because she is a really nice and such a good climber and one of my London and South East team mates!

Everyone from White Spider did so well and we were super happy and excited particularly because our region won the Team trophy and we got to go up and collect it…Hurray J. It was a great day and such a fun experience. I loved being there with my White Spider team mates and meeting lots of other girls who are really great climbers. I am going to work hard now at my lead climbing now so that I can try and get there again next year!!'

Well Done White Spider Performance Squad, you all did amazing!

BMC YCS – Round 3 at The Castle

squad1

On the 29th March our Performance Squad had the regional final of the BMC Youth Climbing Series. Again our team did amazingly well with two regional champions and two second places, first time round for the White Spider Squad!

The 'fantastic 4' will be off to compete in the Grand Final at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena in Ratho.

squad

So what's it like to compete?

spider

We asked our original and super strong 'Spider Baby', Christopher Butcher, to tell us what it was like competing in the regional final at The Castle climbing centre. This is what he said.

'It was the big day! The final round of the BMC Youth regional competition.  The top 5 from London South region would compete against the top 5 from London North in their age group at The Castle.  White Spider had 10 squad members competing.

As we approached from the tube station, I realized how big it was. It really does look like a castle from the outside, and inside the walls are higher than most of us had climbed before.  We couldn’t help feeling nervous as we waited for our turn to boulder and top-rope or lead (for the older age groups), especially as we realised the standard of the other climbers there. But the whole squad have been training hard and we knew that we had it in us to climb well and do White Spider proud.  The climbs were hard and set to test our full strength, agility and skills.  It was a tough competition for all of us.

After a long day climbing, we waited for the results to be announced.  There was an air of anticipation; a top 3 placing meant a place at the BMC finals in Edinburgh in June!  Libby won Girls A, Immy Girls B and Beth placed 2nd in Girls D And me?  A 2nd place in Boys D meant that I will be joining the 3 girls on a trip to Edinburgh, climbing at Europe’s biggest indoor climbing arena, Ratho.  Where the walls will be even higher!  Well done to all the other squad members who climbed well and only just missed out on finals places.  And a big thanks to our awesome coaches Belinda, Bronagh and Andre and to all the White Spider staff who’ve supported and encouraged us throughout.  So if you see us training hard at White Spider, you’ll know what we are training for.  Wish us all the best for June!

By Christopher ‘Spiderbaby’ Butcher

WS Junior Squad member. Aged 10.'

We also had an amazing result with one of our regular kids club members, Tomasz Kolasinki, he came 3rd at The Castle which means he is also off to Ratho! Well done Tom!

A massive well done! We're all so proud!

Blokfest 2014 White Spider Performance Squad Results

Saturday 15th February was the last of 5 Blokfest festivals, a Bouldering competition consisting of 5 rounds, each at a different venue, as well as a team of world-class boulder setters who create 25 exciting boulder problems for each category to tackle ranging from the very easy to the extremely hard. Each event is massive! It’s thrilling, inspiring and a whole lot of fun!

It was the first Blokfest for the White Spider Performance squad, and they did us all proud yet again! The team had some amazing results, leading the way where Imogen Horrocks and Madeleine Broughton who both won their categories overall.

So how did they do? . . . our guys did as follows (for the series as a whole)

Results from the BMC Youth Climbing Series 2014 round 1

On the 25th of January we hosted the first round of the regional BMC Youth Climbing Series, here at White Spider!

Libby (T-Rex) Gamble and Imogen (Immy) Horrocks

A fun and exciting series of competitions for children aged between 7 and 17. There are 2 rounds within each region, London & South East has been split this year into North and South as the competition is getting bigger and better with each year passing, and then a regional final. The regional final will decide which London and South East team will then go on and compete at the National Final at Ratho in Edinburgh in June.

All children have to complete 3 boulder problems and 3 routes in their age categories, all setting of boulders and routes take into account the age and size the competitors are likely to be within each category. Points are scored based on how far each competitor manages to climb up a boulder problem or route; there is a maximum of 100 points for routes and 60 for each of the boulder problem.

The children are separated into the five categories, the girls and boys are divided into their own age groups that follow the IFSC (International Federation of Sport Climbing) system based on year of birth.

Youth A – those born in 1997 & 1998
Youth B – those born in 1999 & 2000
Youth C – those born in 2001 & 2002
Youth D – those born in 2003 & 2004
Youth E – those born in 2005 & 2006

So with much excitement and anticipation, especially with having our very own amazing performance squad this year, we opened the event! Robyn O’Leary, Area Youth Coordinator, started with a quick briefing and it was all systems go!

Parents, Coaches and volunteers jumped to their posts (a huge thank you to those who got involved and helped us out!) then it was time to climb and show us what they were made off. All participants worked incredibly hard and an inspiration to both the staff and everyone else in the centre, so well done everyone!

So how did we do? . . .
All were psyched and felt the pressure having to perform here at a home crowd!

Libby (T-rex) Gamble looked strong and didn’t disappoint, looking more than comfortable on the routes winning her category, Girls A. Imogen (Immy) Horrocks also crushed, achieving full points in bouldering and did extremely well on routes meaning we saw her win her category, Girls B.  Another win came from category Boys D, our little (and not to be underestimated) Spider Baby Christopher Butcher. Christopher showcased some great climbing on Saturday and we’re so happy he managed the win!

Our little ‘Munchkin’ Lucy Rattue did exceedingly well to accomplish 2nd place in her Girls C category, well done Lucy! Other results within the team saw Nat Hudspith, Boys B, and Ryan Caby, Boys A, on the podium, they were up against some strong competition and did extremely well to achieve 3rd place in their categories. Other great results include a 4th place for Beth Christian aka ‘wonderbaby’ in Girls D as well as a 5th place for Madeleine Broughton (Moo) in the same category, both displayed great team spirit and we loved their positive attitude. Kirsten Gentleman came in at 5th in Girls B, Kirsten overcame nerves and climbed very well to achieve a great result. Matt Davies also came in 5th in Boys A, again he displayed some great climbing.

White Spider Squad YCS 2014 winners

White Spider Squad YCS 2014 winners
A massive thank you to the squad coaches, Andre Hedger, Belinda Fuller, Bronagh Cairns and David Collom, who support and nurture the dedicated talents within our incredible ‘White Spider Performance team’. Thank you to all the parents of the performance squad, without your help and support we wouldn’t have done so well, the team loves you guys!

We would also like to say thanks to the route setters, Yann Genoux, Gaz Parry, Evie Cotrulia and Stew Terry. You guys created some awesome routes and boulder problems, which kept the competition interesting and nerve-wrecking!

Another shout to Gaz Parry and Scarpa for holding a Scarpa boot Demo here at the Spider, we hope everyone tried out plenty of shoes. Again a big thank you to Beyond Hope and Mountain Boot co for providing the prizes for all podium finishers.

Gaz Parry Scarpa Demo
After an early morning, countless coffees, many great climbs and a lot of positive energy floating around, we all made it happen! All in all, a great day! We’re all proud of the team here at White Spider. It’s onwards and upwards and we’re expecting some more great results in the next round at Craggy Guildford on Saturday the 1st March.
